How Massage Can Help Improve Sleep

Quality sleep is a requirement for your mental and physical health. Not only can insufficient sleep affect your focus, concentration, and overall mental stability, but when poor sleep continues over a long period of time, it may also contribute to physical health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease and a variety of other chronic illnesses. Insomnia (difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep) is a common struggle for many people. Chronic insomnia happens when you experience insomnia every night or almost every night for several months. The good news is there may be solutions for your sleeping problems… massage therapy.

Good Health Means Better Sleep

Most people typically find that massage is very relaxing, but you may not be aware of the many benefits that massage therapy has, especially when it comes to promoting sleep. Not only can massage therapy be beneficial in helping you combat insomnia, but it may help with many chronic conditions that play a role in your inability to sleep. Massage helps to promote an overall wellness; most people tend to experience relaxation and have a more positive mood during and after a massage. Research has indicated that it can also be effective in relieving muscle fatigue, reducing pain and relieving anxiety and depression. It is basically a natural method to promote overall good health, which plays a significant role in how well you sleep.

Massage May Increase Melatonin Production

One of the ways massage therapy is beneficial in promoting better sleep is by promoting the production of serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter in the brain. It is believed that serotonin is used as a communicator to the part of your brain that helps encourage your body to enter a deep sleep. Melatonin, a hormone that helps your brain and body slow down so you can fall asleep, is produced by serotonin. Massage also helps to initiate delta waves, which are the brain waves that appear during a deep sleep.

The overall duration of massage therapy for helping to promote better sleep depends on your individual needs and the frequency of your inability to sleep. Generally having a 30-minute massage session twice a week will have a positive effect on sleep problems. It is important to keep in mind that although massage therapy will help to improve your sleeping patterns if you continue to struggle with insomnia, you should talk with your healthcare professional about your concerns.
